As you likely already know, my company’s name is Zainatain. It is a name I am proud of, as it is derived from my son’s name. If you’ve ever named something or someone before – like your business, child, or pet snail – you know names matter. You put thought and heart into it. A name carries meaning.
So I named my web design and consulting business just three years ago. As a CRO strategist, I want my site to be optimized for reaching my target audience. SEO is part of that process. This is my area of expertise, and I want my business website to reflect that.
What? Where?
Much like we do for our clients, I started checking out some of our website’s SEO stats. Well it turns out that I was getting a lot of organic website visitors from people in Scotland. So I did some digging in my website data and metrics, and found out that I was ranking in searches for “web designers in Tain”.
What??? What is that? Where is that? Turns out Tain is a small historical town in the Scottish Highlands. My partial Scottish heritage was proud, but as a CRO strategist, I was disappointed in the search results. No offensive to you Tain folks – if you’re someone in Tain looking for a web designer, I’d be more than happy to work with you… but I am sadly not in Tain.
The long-term game
I set to work to change the Google search results. A lot of people think SEO is a quick fix, but it’s actually a long-term game. The impact of SEO on your online presence is profound and lasting—and can make a significant difference when it comes to achieving your business goals and reaching your target audience. Our strategy to change our SEO ranking has included focusing on key word selection, writing journal articles, and building my portfolio page on my site with backlinks, to name a few. Now, we have begun to organically rank for many other relevant keywords that aren’t “web designers in tain”.
Starting out in business, we can often narrowly look for those quick wins. Yes, those are important. But considering the long-term game, what are those consistent blocks that you’re building on? What are you doing that will help your business thrive for years to come? SEO isn’t a one-time fix. It’s an ongoing process to ensure that your website remains up-to-date with search engine algorithms and customer trends.
Our strategy that I shared above is never complete. We continue to carry out that strategy, and maintain building on those previous blocks that we began implementing several years ago. We’re always iterating.
By focusing on SEO, you’re making sure that interested customers are able to easily find your website. It helps ensure that your potential customers are hearing about you, and helps increase the visibility of your brand. SEO also affects how well your site ranks in relation to similar sites in search engine results pages. This means you’ll be competing with the right kind of competition—not just websites showing up in searches for Tain, Scotland.
